TEXT 1

            Crossing the street while listening to an MP3 may soon be ilegal in New York. A law has been proposed in response to several deaths apparently caused by pedestrians stepping into traffic listening to iPods. The ban would also extend to other electronic devices including cell phones, video games and handheld email devices, and offenders would face a $ 100 fine.

TEXT 2

Seven Wrongs - the words of Ghandi.

            Mahatma1 Ghandi knew that nonviolence could never be created from the outside. It has to be born from within. He was once asked what he feared the most. His answer was: "Educated people without love and compassion". The Mahatma knew that nonviolence comes from the goodness of people. The difficulty is that one cannot demand goodness without showing it oneself. Governments can only assist.
Ghandi spoke correctly when he said: "You will never create enough laws to make people good".
            Late in life Ghandi wrote down his Seven Wrongs:
  • wealth without work;
  • pleasure without conscience;
  • knowledge without character;
  • commerce without morality;
  • science without humanity;
  • worship without sacrifice;
  • politics without principles.
            Each wrong could support a lifetime of study and contemplation and each is part of our world. Ghandi knew that our activities must be tempered with noble qualities.

1Mahatma (in India) - title given to person regarded with great reverence because of his wisdom and holiness.
